Share the discovery of meteorites.
Meteorites are the oldest rocks in existence: the only surviving physical record of the formation and evolution of the Solar System. Meteorites create a fireball as they travel through the atmosphere - you may have even seen one yourself.
Curtin University’s Fireballs in the Sky program inspires people around the world to capture fireball sightings by using their smartphone. The app transforms your smartphone into a scientific instrument that quickly records all of the information from a sighting. These observations help us address some of the biggest questions in planetary science by triangulating the trajectory of meteorites, which can help scientists identify where they land, and also where they came from in space.
Fireballs in the Sky was recently awarded the prestigious Eureka Prize for Innovation in Citizen Science and was named Chevron Science Engagement Initiative of the Year at the Premier’s Science Awards.
