Taking part in a world-first scientific voyage.
Curtin is a university with a strong reputation for innovative research that makes a difference. One of our researchers, Dr Nina Schuback, will join an elite team of scientists who will head out on the first international scientific expedition to fully circumnavigate Antarctica to measure the impact of climate change and pollution in the Southern Ocean.
The three-month Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition will leave aboard the Akademik Treshnikov, a Russian research vessel, in December. Dr Schuback, a biological oceanographer, will examine the abundance of phytoplankton – tiny organisms that play a unique role as the first link in the food chain – in the Southern Ocean, as a way to learn more about the impact of human activity on carbon cycling in the region.
